Critical Analysis of the Research Paper

A Brief of The Research Paper

The research paper by Tahir Ahmad and Amy Van Looy of Ghent University is focused on the junction of Business Process Management (BPM) and digital innovations to investigate how the emerging technologies change traditional BPM practices. New technologies can turn the usual business process management (BPM) into an investigative approach. To effectively profit from modern IT, it's important to understand BPM's research potential and identify current trends in practice. This study offers a systematic literature review (SLR) of 231 current academic publications (2014-May 2019) that merge BPM with digital innovations (DI). The research papers were matched with seven future BPM-DI themes which were indicated by an expert group. The research paper can mediate the rigor-relevance gap by integrating expected changes in practice with state-of-the-art literature reviews, revealing both covered and uncovered subjects. BPM technology is mainly centered on value creation, customer engagement, and knowledge intensive process control [1].

Technology progresses rapidly in the modern day, which makes it hard for organizations to embrace new technologies such as blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence. Those trends are tending to a hybrid BPM, i.e. the following both exploiting the current technology and exploring new IT. The paper highlights the need for organizations to leverage digital innovations to improve their process capabilities for them to be able to remain competitive in the market. The study also presents seven future BPM-DI trends which have been derived from an expert panel, providing valuable knowledge of the advancing BPM and digital innovation landscape. This research seeks to fill the rigor-relevance gap and to assist scholarly and organizational setting in preparing for digital needs in future by aligning these trends with themes covered in the literature review [2]. The main technological consequences in BPM area concern value creation, customer interaction and management of human-centric and knowledge-intensive business processes for university assignment help.

The study made an important discovery with regard to the influence of the modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT and blockchain which gave a significant boost to the business process capabilities of the organization. On the other hand, the effective integration of the digital innovation into the business processes requires the considerations related to learning and development, knowledge management, and cultural acceptance of the new technologies. Agile BPM adoption is another identified as critical for business process success. The research paper does not only outline possible areas of research but also provides practical recommendations to BPM managers and practitioners based on the analysis of 231 papers reviewed [1].

Research Methodology

The research paper has significantly employed Systematic Literature Review Methodology shortly known as (SLR). This methodology aims to examine Business Process Management (BPM) and its integrations with the digital innovations. 231 literatures reviews were analysed including academic articles published from 2014 to May 2019, journals, research papers, books, and many more. Each of the paper focused on identifying trends, gaps, and opportunities in the BPM-DI landscape. That approach considers in a systematic way many literature sources giving interpretation of all of them [3].

SLR points out 07 type of BPM-DI trends that are drawn from expert panel which is the consequence of the flexibility of BPM practice with respect to the digital innovations. Research outcomes show that the future of business management involves a combination of newer technologies especially artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and blockchain which help an organization reduce as many operations as possible [1]. The study aspires to illustrate the contribution of agile BPM, learning, and cultural acceptance in providing successful digital transformation in the organizations. Furthermore, the classification scheme used in the research categorizes the 231 identified papers into three main categories: 135 IS-oriented studies, 87 managerial studies that show the interplay of DI and BPM, and nine literature studies. This classification helps to define the research field and to set all types of research themes on the basis of the inputs of each class [5].

Problems or Issues Highlighted by The Authors

The authors highlighted several problems and issues in the research paper-

• Data Security and Privacy Concerns- It s one of the major issues highlighted in the research paper as digital innovations tends to collect huge amount of personal data of the consumers as well as employees which leads to privacy and security concerns. Organizations are confronted with security of sensitive data and compliance of regulatory requirements when using digital technologies for BPM. The authors stress that data breaches and privacy violations could destroy the organizational trust and reputation, which points to the necessity of development of strong security measures and compliance protocols [6].

• Organizational Change Management- Another salient point is the requirement for successful organizational change management to underpin digital transformation efforts. Digital integration of BPM is usually associated with substantial changes to existing processes, structures, and cultures within organizations. Change resistance, lack of leadership support, and poor change management approaches can impede successful digital transformation initiatives [7]. The authors stress the need to deal with these challenges using proactive change management approaches, stakeholder involvement, and communication strategies.

• Cultural Transformation- The paper also considers cultural change as a crucial factor in facilitating BPM-digital integration. Culture of an organization is an important factor influencing the attitudes, behavior and decision-making measures regarding the digital initiatives. Nevertheless, cultural barriers like the unwillingness to adopt new technologies, siloed mindsets, and resistance to risks, can obstruct digital transformation initiatives [1]. The authors favor creation of a culture of innovation, collaboration, and lifelong learning, to support BPM practices and promote digital innovation.

• Technology Adoption and Integration Challenges- Furthermore, the challenges concerning the adoption and integration of technology in the BPM setting are underscored by the authors. Digital technologies create a scope for improvement of the processes at different levels and also in a better and more efficient way but the problem comes in choosing, implementing, and integrating these technologies into the existing BPM frameworks for the organizations. Issues like compatibility, interoperability, and scalability of digital solutions may become serious obstacles to the successful deployment [8].
