Task Summary

This workbook will address topics covered in Module 1 and 2 and give you the opportunity to delve deeper into the topics through further research and practical application. After completing these activities, you should have a better understanding of the theory underlying person-centred practice and the use of reflection to improve your practice.

Task Instructions

To complete this assessment task, you must attempt every question in Activities 1, 2 and 3. Each activity will require you to do further research. You should write 250 words for each activity. Please provide a cover page for your workbook stating your name, student number, assessment number, lecturer name and word count. The workbook should have a heading for example: “Person-Centred Therapy Workbook”, followed by subheadings for each activity.

Activity 1 (250 words):

Person-centred therapy is a humanist approach to working with clients. What does this mean?
In what way does person-centred therapy demonstrate a humanist approach? Name another humanist therapy and explain in what way it is similar to person-centred therapy.

Rogers believed that six conditions are necessary and sufficient for a relationship to result in positive change within a client. Name and briefly explain the six conditions for therapeutic change.

Activity 1

Person-Centered therapy is a kind of therapeutic model, which is kind of different from the other traditional therapeutic model. Unlike the other therapeutic models, this approach directs the therapists towards empathetic and non-directive approach, which motivates the clients for a positive behavioral change in therapeutic process (Garcia, Cloninger & Cloninger, 2023). University Assignment Help, The model is developed with the belief of American psychologist Carl Roger, who used to believe that every human being has the capacity to fulfil their own potential and they strive to fulfil the same.

Person-centered therapy demonstrates a humanist approach in therapy process because it focuses on natural inclination of human being like “self-actualization” or “actualizing tendency”. In this approach, the therapists offer guidance and support to client through empathy and unconditional positive regards rather than only directing the course of therapy. This is called as humanist approach because is focuses more on “client” and not “patient”. Here, both therapist and client act as equal partner in therapy process rather than a model where therapists treat people as patient (Rodríguez-Nogueira et al., 2020).

Another humanist therapy is Gestalt therapy, where therapist focuses on client’s freedom, awareness and self-directive approach towards treating them. Just like the Person-Centered therapy, Gestalt therapy also gives importance to the empathetic behavior of therapist with the clients rather than just directing the course of therapy. Both therapeutic models believe in potential growth of human, where client is the ultimate human who can bring positive change in therapy through self-actualization (Francesetti and Roubal, 2020). In both therapy, therapist is more concerned with the subjective awareness of the client and treatment through authenticity and warmth.

Activity 2

Carl Roger identified 6 conditions for person-centered therapy to stimulate growth within a client during therapy process. As per his belief, when these 6 conditions are met, it helps a client to achieve a constructive fulfilment of his-her full potential. The 6 conditions are explained briefly below:

Therapist-Client Psychological Contact: The first condition is that there must a friendly and trustable psychological contact between client and therapist for a positive change in client. It helps client to share issues with an open mind and thereby receives accurate treatment.

Client Incongruence: This a vulnerable condition of client that arises when clients feel any discrepancies in their self-image and their current experience in therapy process. Hence, such condition should be avoided in the process, where client feels fear or anxiety (Whitehead and Purvis, 2023).

Therapist Congruence: This condition implies that therapists should be congruent, genuine and self-aware in the therapy process. They should be real and authentic so that client can build a trusting relationship with them for better counselling.

Therapist Unconditional Positive Regard: This condition suggests that therapists should accept every kind of experience of client be it positive or negative without judging them. This condition will help the clients to share their experience of therapy without any fear or hesitation.

Therapist Empathy: In this condition, the therapists should demonstrate empathetic understanding of client’s feelings and experiences. Such active listening attitude will help the therapist to better understand the issue of the clients towards providing accurate counselling (Garcia, Cloninger & Cloninger, 2023).

Client Perception: This condition shows the extent to which clients perceive the empathetic understanding and unconditional positive regard of the therapists. The client can feel free and secured when they have positive perception about this behavior of therapists.

Activity 3

Reflection practice is a good practice in counselling practice for the therapists, where it encourages their growth and development in the counselling process Fergusson, van der Laan & Baker, 2019). I am using Driscoll model of reflection for my learning journal. I have selected this model because it provides a structure approach of reflection through simple 3 questions of What, So What and Now What. It helps in investigating a particular situation properly and detailed manner. It gives the scope of focusing on most significant factors of the situation. Hence, it becomes easier to identify the initiatives for future towards improving the situation or self-flaws.

This model has benefitted me in my learning in many ways up to this point. It kept me engaged and explore my learning experience in a detailed manner. With this reflection model, I can keep track on my learning progress on an everyday basis and evaluate learning moments to explore on new learnings. Moreover, this model helped me in developing my professional attitude by exploring self-learning and focusing on new form of practical learning experiences.

I will use reflection model in my counselling practice while I will become a qualified practitioner. I will use the model to better understand the situation in an in-depth manner while interacting with the clients under treatment. Moreover, I will use written reflection to understand my reaction during my interaction with the clients. This will help me to realize my issues in counselling session and thus help me to improvement myself and emotionally connect with client for an effective practice.
